Royal Victoria Infirmary is home to the regional children’s home ventilation team who have years of expertise in all aspects of children’s long term ventilation needs.
Delivered by experienced, specially qualified nurses and physiotherapists from the paediatric long term ventilation team, this training aims to provide learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage the tracheostomy ventilation needs of a paediatric patient requiring long term ventilation at home.
Each training course is bespoke, tailored to the needs of the individual and can be delivered 1:1, 1:2 or in small groups.
The individual specific needs will be identified prior to the commencement of the training session and all reasonable adjustments will be made in advance of commencement.
A range of different teaching methods are used throughout each session with resources including home ventilation and learner reading materials.
Audience
Carers who will be providing care for paediatric patients who require long term ventilation at home.
Please note: There is an expectation that carers are already competent with tracheostomy care and resuscitation.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course carers will be able to understand:
- the reason for ventilation
- how to use the selected ventilator, circuit and humidifier
- the components of the circuit, when different circuits are needed
- how to care for and maintain the circuit
- administration of oxygen
- how to respond to alarms and troubleshoot.
