SUMMARY:Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) Training
DESCRIPTION:Our Radiation Protection Supervisor Training encompasses the fundamental principles of radiation safety combined with practical scenario based teaching with the aim to provide you with the appropriate knowledge and confidence to fulfil your duties as an RPS in your workplace. \nUnder the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17)\, employers have a duty to provide appropriate training for all employees working with ionising radiation. \nThese regulations also require radiation employers to appoint one or more suitable Radiation Protection Supervisors (RPS) to ensure compliance with radiation safety measures in accordance with the employer’s Local Rules. \nThis course is suitable for those new to the RPS role and for existing RPS who require refresher training.   \nIf your employer is not a client of the Northern Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering department\, you should contact us before booking a place to ensure that the content is relevant to your work area. \nLearning outcomes\nThe purpose of our training course is to ensure that delegates have a sound understanding of: \n\nthe nature of radiation and its effects on the human body.\nthe legalisation surrounding its use.\nthe basic principles of radiation protection in the workplace.\n\nDelegates will benefit from discussions that will enable them to: \n\nevaluate radiation risks and the effectiveness of the existing controls in relation to their workplace.\nunderstand the practicalities of monitoring of staff\, including performing investigations.\n\nThe course also covers the expectations of inspectors in relation to radiation safety and compliance with the associated regulations. \nCourse lead\nIan Birch\, Head of Radiation Safety at the Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department supported by an experienced team of radiation safety professionals. \nCourse delivery\nThe course has been designed to reflect the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 and the associated Approved Code of Practice and guidance (L121) and has been developed around the Core of Competence for RPS as defined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in their IRP6 Information Sheet.  To optimise learning\, training is delivered in hybrid format: \nPart 1\nThe delegate has access to pre-recorded material concerning the theory and underpinning knowledge required by the RPS. \nDelegates can view the learning material at their own pace; around their own schedule. \nFollowing the successful completion of the online assessment\, the delegate is able to select from the available dates and book a place on Part 2. \nPart 2\nLive\, online teaching in a small group (typically 6-8 participants)\, delivered in a half-day session. \nWe aim to provide 10 of these sessions across the year\, normally on Tuesdays from 9am – 1pm. \nThis session will build on the knowledge gained in Part 1 with a focus on the practical aspects of an RPS’s duties in the workplace. \nThe scheduled dates for Part 2 are: \n  \n\n\n\nDay\nDate\nStart\nFinish\n\n\nTuesday\n16-Apr-24\n09:00\n13:00\n\n\nTuesday\n14-May-24\n09:00\n13:00\n\n\nTuesday\n25-Jun-24\n09:00\n13:00\n\n\nTuesday\n09-Jul-24\n09:00\n13:00\n\n\nTuesday\n17-Sep-24\n09:00\n13:00\n\n\nTuesday\n15-Oct-24\n09:00\n13:00\n\n\nTuesday\n26-Nov-24\n09:00\n13:00\n\n\nTuesday\n14-Jan-25\n09:00\n13:00\n\n\nTuesday\n11-Feb-25\n09:00\n13:00\n\n\nTuesday\n11-Mar-25\n09:00\n13:00\n\n\n\nThe total study time for this course is approximately 8 hours. \nOnce you have a confirmed booking you will receive notification of your user account to gain access to our virtual learning environment\, known as the Learning Lab.  This account will allow you access to the pre-recorded material and online assessment for Part 1.  Once you have successfully completed Part 1 you will then be able to book yourself onto your preferred meeting for Part 2 via the Learning Lab.  Full instructions will be provided upon confirmation of your booking. \nFinancial Information                                                                           \nThe following organisations pay for a number of RPS training places through formal agreements that are in place.
