It takes a huge amount of energy, commitment, collaboration, planning, lots of enthusiasm and perhaps a pinch of tenacity.
Yet there’s a lot of support for you and it is entirely worth it to see the benefits of your work influencing practice and shaping the care we provide in the NHS.
Developed by NMAHPs for NMAHPs
The 4Ps Programme has been developed by the Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals at the Newcastle Hospitals to support your needs regardless of where you are on the “research interested” to “Aspiring Clinical Academic” continuum.
This is a welcoming jargon-free modular programme. The four modules are Place, Project, Person, and Plan, and they provide you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to move forward with research.
The starting point for the programme is our pre-requisite Foundation session.
The programme is delivered by a range of NMAHP clinical-academic colleagues, and with input from relevant organisations including the Research Design Service, Patient and Public Involvement panels, universities and funders.
NMAHPs Research Clinical Educator James Faraday gives an overview of the 4Ps Programme and introduces the Foundation session.
So what are the 4 Ps?
Place
“I am as nowhere as I can be, can you add some somewhere to me?”
This module will help you to think about developing the right collaborations, identifying the right expertise and choosing and engaging with mentors and supervisors who can support you on your journey.
This is such an important ingredient as relationships with mentors and supervisors can influence your whole career and can really help you to go places.

Project
“Push harder than yesterday if you want a different tomorrow…”
This module will explore a recipe of key ingredients for a research project such as:
- linking your work to strategic priorities
- looking at the literature
- developing your research question
- identifying the right methodology and
- ultimately starting to develop a project plan or application for funding.

Person
“The best project you will ever work on is you…”
This module will help you to focus on you as an individual, as a researcher and as a leader.
We’ll cover things like developing your research CV, writing activities, public speaking and all things confidence building for you as a
researcher.

Plan
“It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan.”
Planning is so important for any piece of research, but it’s not just about planning the project.
This session will help you to think about the bigger picture, influencing up, down and across.
Also what to do next regardless of the outcome of a research related funding or fellowship application.
